Getting your man on board with a cruising holiday

It’s estimated that between 70 and 85 per cent of all family travel decisions are made by women. They choose where, when and how, and generally the men in their life are happy to follow along. It can be hard to choose a holiday that appeals to everyone, but step on board one of Carnival’s action-packed cruise ships and you’ll all be blown away – especially the guys.

Once upon a time, cruise activities were limited to shuffleboard and naps. Not anymore. The active men can start their day with a session in the state-of-the-art fitness centre or a spin around the padded jogging track on the ship’s upper deck. From there, they can shoot some hoops on the basketball court, embrace their inner child at the water park or tackle the obstacles on the mini-golf course.

All that exercise is sure to work up an appetite and this is where cruising comes into its own. There are a dozen dining options on board both Carnival Spirit and Carnival Legend, and most of them are included in your fare. As with the activities, ships have come a long way from the days of the uninspiring buffet. Start every day with bacon and eggs, pancakes or a made-to-order omelette. Grab a burger or hot dog by the pool for lunch and, if you’re still peckish after dinner, head over to the 24/7 Pizza Pirate for a midnight snack. Carnivals Spirit’s recent revamp saw a few new man-friendly options open up, such as the RedFrog Pub, BlueIguana Mexican Cantina and Guy’s Burger Joint from US celebrity chef Guy Fieri.

Then there are the two words that are music to the ears of any parent on a family holiday: adults only. On board both Carnival Spirit and Carnival Legend you’ll find the plush Serenity™ Retreat, an exclusive haven decked out with sun loungers, hammocks, shady umbrellas and a pool. Of course, there’s also a bar and plenty of staff to deliver an uninterrupted stream of beer to your hubby’s chair. No-one under 18 is allowed, so it’s the perfect spot for the grown-ups to catch up on their reading, work on their tan or just enjoy some adult conversation without interruptions.

When the sun goes down, the lights come up on a huge range of bloke-friendly entertainment. Laugh it up with top Aussie comedians at the Punchliner Comedy Club, take in one of the world-class stage shows, or sing along to your favourite tunes in the Piano Bar. And you can enjoy the shows without the kids. Send the little ones off to the Night Owls* after-hours kids’ club or the teenagers to one of the cool supervised lounges designed just for them.

But what’s a man’s biggest incentive to go on a cruising holiday? While the ladies in their life hit the shops or the kids play in the video arcade, they can watch a game in the Sports Bar or have a beer by the pool – completely guilt-free.
